Ear Infection Symptoms


The following symptoms may develop with ear infection:

  • Ear ache
  • Itching or other discomfort in the ear or ear canal
  • Drainage from the ear
  • Hearing loss
  • Ear noise or buzzing
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Irritability
  • Feeling of general illness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea
Ear infection causes pain, but can be hard to detect in infants and young children because they cannot tell you their ear hurts. Symptoms in infants and young children include:
  • Irritability
  • Inconsolable crying
  • Fever
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Failure to respond to sounds
  • Fluid that drains from the ears
  • Fullness in the ear
  • Fluid that drains from the ears
  • Fullness in the ear
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
Children may develop an ear infection shortly after having a cold, or may have symptoms similar to a cold.
