Kidney Infection Follow Up

In diabetic patients and pregnant women, as well as in people with spinal paralysis, follow-up tests should be conducted at the completion of antibiotic therapy to ensure that bacteria are no longer present in the urine. Also, if you've been diagnosed with a kidney infection, but symptoms persist after treatment or new symptoms appear, contact your health care provider.

Your health care provider may offer preventive measures to avoid recurrence of infection, including:

  • Quickly treating bladder and urinary tract infection.
  • Keeping the genital area clean and wiping front to back.
  • Urinating immediately after sexual intercourse.
  • Avoiding holding urination in for a long period of time.
  • Increasing fluid intake, especially of water, to 64 -128 ounces per day.
  • Drinking cranberry juice for infection-fighting properties.
  • Showering rather than bathing.
  • Avoiding feminine products in the genital area.
